Born in Mérida, Sofia delights in preparing local Yucatecan and Mayan dishes that showcase the cultural heritage of the Yucatán Peninsula. An accomplished home-cook, Sofia learned to cook from her mother and grandmother and says the talent runs in the family. For the last 20 years Sofia has run a home-stay for visitors to Mérida. She loves having guests in her home and gets great pleasure by sharing her Yucatecan culture through food and a pleasant conversation. <br><br> “I've been receiving guest at home for more than 20 years, and each one of them takes a bit of my heart with them but they also leave a bit of theirs!”

Cooking experience (1 - 4 guests) Travel inland from the port in Progreso and discover the culture through food, in this Mexican cooking class in Merida in a local home. There is no better way of learning and discovering than from a direct source, and when Sofia shares her love of what she does best you will remember this day forever.
In your Merida cooking class, you will work side by side with Sofia in her own kitchen as she teaches you how to make traditional Yucatecan dishes from scratch, such as sikilpak (ground pumpkin seed dip) and codzitos (Yucatecan appetizer) or empanadas de chaya and panuchos y salbut (tortilla with shredded chicken and garnished with lettuce and onion) or tacos al pastor. And of course, no lesson in Yucatecan cooking would not be complete without the famous fiery habanero salsa! Once all the dishes are prepared you will sit down and enjoy the fruits of your labors, along with a delicious local beer.
Notes: Your Progreso, Merida Shore Excursion includes a private, hands-on Yucatecan cooking class, a glass of local alcohol and port pick-up and drop off (Sofia will pick you up from the Auto Progreso shuttle terminal and drive you to her home in Chelem, and will drop you off at the shuttle terminal at the end of your culinary experience).
