I had so much fun at Bob's house. He really likes to entertain. There was food, wine, homemade cookies, stimulating conversation and board games. Bob is the ultimate host. He is funny and thoughtful and makes everyone feel welcome.
My experience with Min on Inle Lake was one of my favorite, most memorable experiences of a recent 10-day solo journey throughout Myanmar - and I packed my trip full of incredible things. Min confirmed my class via email about 2 weeks prior to the date and then on the day of my cooking class, Min arrived at my hotel early in order to pick me up for the day. I could tell immediately that Min is very outgoing and friendly and we chatted the entire boat ride to the market - about my trip, my job, Inle Lake, our past experiences, similarities and differences between our countries, American politics and more. Min is one of the best English speakers I encountered during my time in Myanmar - and he actually knows some spanish, too! Going to the market to shop with Min was so much fun - and felt different than the previous market visits I had done to just have a look around. He had me trying samples of different foods, bargaining with vendors and explaining why he was choosing this or that. I also got to make decisions about what we would cook. After the market visit, we continued on to his village, which is made up of about 70 houses, and where Min has built two small houses specifically for use for his cooking classes. Each has a kitchen, large table for preparing the food and outdoor porch with picnic table and two umbrellas as well as a bathroom and sink - perfect. Here, Min's wife, May, and sister, Yin, are beginning to prepare the ingredients for the class. Min says right away, "please, make yourself at home" and he means it. Take water or soda from the fridge, take photos, take a break, whatever you want. Throughout the morning, we worked together to make 8 different dishes. I had lots of questions for Min and May and we talked a lot in between their instructing me. Once all the food was all ready, we sat together outside and enjoyed a feast - green tomato salad, fried spring onions and veggies, vegetable curry, a fish dish, a chicken dish, chickpea tofu dish, smoked eggplant salad and more. It was all delicious! Afterwards, Min or May gave me a tour in a canoe through their village, their floating gardens and then they invited me into their home for a tour and tea. Added bonus - they have an adorable 2 year old son!! All in all, amazing experience and HIGHLY recommended.
Our entire experience was amazing! This is definitely one of the highlights of our honeymoon. A few favorite memories: 1. Exploring the local market - We picked out the live fish for one of our dishes and watched coconut milk being freshly made. 2. Walking through and picking different type of produce from Pea's garden - Kaffir lime, galangal, basil, lemongrass, long beans, and cucumber. We also enjoyed seeing the other plants, chickens, turkeys, and roosters! 3. Cooking all four dishes - Since just the two of us spending the day with Pea, we got to cook everything on our own. This was just incredible! All the dishes were so fresh, so delicious. We enjoy cooking a lot so getting the chance to prep and cook everything is fantastic. The dishes we made were green curry with chicken, a Chinese-Thai fish dish, Nam Prik Ong (resembling a bolognese sauce/dip with dried chili, tomato, and ground pork) eaten with sticky rice, and pad thai. 4. Learning about our host and Thai culture - Pea was such a generous host. After sharing our meal she gave us a tour of her house and shared many stories with us. One part we particularly enjoyed was viewing and learning about her family shrine. She explained the significance of the room for Buddha, her family history and the different heirlooms.
Start your outdoor experience with a pick-up from your hotel and drive to Pea’s home. The experience takes place in Pea's beautiful garden area. First she will give you a tour of her vegetable garden while you engage in interesting conversation about ingredients, traditions, culture and the Thai way of life. You will learn how essential Thai herbs such as lemongrass and holy basil are grown and will be amazed by the variety of vegetables Pea grows. After the garden tour, snack on some miang kham (a local snack of fresh betel leaves with lime, coconut, and peanuts) before you start your outdoor barbeque experience. Help Pea barbeque the meat or fish and help prepare the salad, before siting down to eat the meal you helped prepare.

Enjoy dishes such as Thai style BBQ fish or chicken or beef or pork (2 kinds of meat), Thai salad, pad thai and sticky rice. End your dinner with a dessert of sweet coconut ice cream or mango sticky rice (when in season).
Join your host Air at his home in Chiang Mai for a Thai home-cooked meal. You will enjoy dishes such as Gang Kiew Waan, a delicious green curry that Air has perfected. Air also will be making an inspiring Peak Gai Thord Samunprai, Gang Jued, Chang Mai Larb, and Khao Glong (Jasmin Brown rice). These are not your basic Thai restaurant dishes, but local Chiang Mai favorites that Air and many residents love to eat!
The experience with Panphailin in Chiang Mai was exceptional from A to Z. Not only is she a phenomenal cook and owns her own beautiful cooking school and organic garden outside of Chiang Mai center, but she is also a warmhearted, funny and a welcoming person. She picked me up on time at my hotel and took me to a local market where she answered and encouraged all of my questions and explained the different local ingredients. Then she showed me around in her huge organic garden where she plants and harvests most of the vegetables she uses for her cooking. She let me try different plants and explained everything to me in perfect English. She is very patient and polite and always made sure I felt at home. She let me help her prepare the food, always explaining the details and I learned a lot. The cooking school is beautiful, clean and she even owns special traditional stoves where she cooked the meals. She makes sure to take into account your taste (spicy or not), your allergies and preferences. The food she cooked was just delicious, healthy and tasted amazing. I would recommend her to everybody who visits Chiang Mai for an extraordinary culinary and cultural experience.
We had a blast. Nid was super friendly and knowledgeable. The class atmosphere was a lot of fun; I felt challenged, but the cooking was manageable.
