Meet Kadek

Unlike a typical Traveling Spoon experience that takes place in a home, this is a unique experience that takes place on an organic community farm and kitchen run by a group of locals interested in sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. After years working in the hospitality industry, Kadek returned to his village in Pejeng, Bali to start his own business with a focus on sustainable farming practices that are kind to the environment. A passionate host, who combines his love for farming, cooking, and healthy food into a fun and immersive cooking class in Ubud on his organic farm. Alongside local community members, Kadek runs an organic farm that promotes waste reduction and sustainable agriculture. He learned traditional Balinese recipes and cooking methods from his mother and his brother-in-law, a chef at a 5-star hotel. Kadek’s family and community members often join the experience, offering guests an authentic glimpse into village life. His mission is to share the benefits of organic farming and the rich culinary traditions of Bali with visitors from around the world.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience (1 - 10 guests) Join Kadek for a guided tour of his organic farm in Ubud, where you’ll gather fresh ingredients for your Balinese cooking class. Explore the farm, learn about local farming practices, and collect produce like beans and lemongrass. The fun, interactive tour lasts 30-45 minutes, with straw hats provided to keep you cool. Afterward, enjoy a refreshing drink and wet towels before starting your hands-on Balinese cooking experience.

Your cooking class in Ubud takes place in a traditional Balinese style outdoor community kitchen. After sipping on a cold beverage, and donning an apron, start by helping Kadek prepare and cook an authentic Balinese meal. During your two-hour Ubud cooking class, you will learn to make 2-3 authentic dishes. Enjoy a meal of the dishes you prepared along with a couple of dishes that Kadek will have prepared in advance. Kadek will also give you a cookbook with recipes of the dishes you cooked so that you can re-create them back home!

After cooking enjoy the meal you helped prepare in a rustic, traditional, outdoor area. Some of the dishes you might try are nasi sela (rice with sweet potato), garang asem (chicken cooked with Balinese spices), tuna satay (traditional Balinese fish kebabs) and sayur urab (green vegetables with coconut and spices). You will end your meal with kolak (banana dessert) and Balinese coffee or lemongrass tea. Please note that Kadek will not join you for the meal, as he first needs to offer the meal to mother nature and prefers that you don’t wait for him to finish the ritual to start your meal.

Notes: Unlike most Traveling Spoon experiences, this is a small-group, shared experience (non-private). Because this experience takes place outdoors it can get a bit hot so please wear clothes and shoes appropriate for walking and cooking in a working farm. We recommend bringing bug spray, sunscreen and a hand towel or tissues.

Prices include round-trip transportation only from Ubud hotels - Hanoman street, Monkey Forest street, and Jl. Raya Ubud. If guests stay outside these areas, pick up point will be in front of Maybank Gianyar (Jl. Raya Ubud No.115, Petulu, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia). Please be sure to include your hotel name and address in the reservation form (only if you're staying in Ubud) so your host can arrange for your pick-up and drop-off.

Die eigene Ernte der Zutaten und das Thema „Organic Farming“ haben direkt mein Interesse geweckt.Mein Fazit vorab: Meine Erwartungen wurden übererfüllt.Unser Kursleiter Kadek hat mit uns vor dem Kochen alle Zutaten auf dem Gelände geerntet und uns dabei das Ziel von „Mai Organic“ Nahe gebracht. Durch die selbständige Ernte und den Kontakt zu einigen der örtlichen Bauern bekommt man einen guten Einblick in die Wichtigkeit des Projektes und auch in die Arbeit die hinter dem Obst- und Gemüseanbau steht. Dadurch wird der Kochkurs meines Erachtens nach ungemein aufgewertet, da man sieht wo alles herkommt und man eine ganz andere Beziehung zu den Zutaten bekommt, als wenn man alles auf einem der örtlichen Märkte einkauft.Kadek und sein Team aus Bauern der Mai Organik Community haben mit uns zusammen dann mehrere klassisch balinesische Gerichte zubereitet und wurden nicht müde unsere Fragen zu beantworten.Ich kann diesen Kurs nur wärmstens empfehlen, da man durch die vorherige Ernte der Zutaten viel über Bali und das dort heimische Obst und Gemüse erfährt und das Projekt „Mai Organic Bali“ unterstützenswert ist."}, {"author_name" : "BackPacker319185", "rating" : 5, "body" : "This is a must do experience in Bali! We loved every minute with this family. Kadek met us on time at our accommodation in Ubud and then took us to the local market in his hometown of Gianyar. We toured the market and Kadek told us about some of the foods we would be cooking with. Such a cool experience! From there we went to his sister Putu's home, where she and Kadek's wife (Ketut) met us to cook a beautiful Balinese meal. We made seven different traditional Balinese dishes and my partner and I were involved in the chopping and preparing of each dish from the start. They also gave us a sheet with recipes to take with us. Putu and Ketut were wonderful teachers and showed us how everything was to be prepared. Afterwards, Kadek took us to his home to see his garden, which was such a treat. This family was amazing, warm and so welcoming. This was the highlight of our trip to Bali. We can't wait to come back!"}] }
