Meet Putu

Putu, a warm and talented home chef, offers travelers an authentic, immersive Balinese cooking experience in Ubud, in her traditional family compound. Growing up alongside her grandparents, who are rice farmers, Putu learned the art of cooking from an early age, helping her grandmother prepare daily meals. Over the years, her passion for cooking has blossomed into both a career and a personal passion. Putu works as a cook at two private villas, specializing in fresh, creative Balinese dishes presented with artistry, often garnished with delicately carved fruit and vegetables. At home, she takes on the sacred responsibility of preparing temple offerings, from small gifts to grand fruit towers, which she carries during temple ceremonies. She also makes homemade jamu, a traditional health tonic made from turmeric.

Putu’s family compound is a lively place where visitors will meet her grandparents, her husband Pasta, and their three children. The compound includes an orchard with jackfruit, cacao, durian, coffee, and bananas, as well as a variety of animals, including pigs, ducks, chickens, and a cow. During visits, Putu and her family offer a guided tour of the compound, sharing insights into their daily life and the significance of their family temple. Guests will also enjoy delicious meals made with rice grown by her grandparents, adding to the authenticity of the experience.

We had a wonderful experience preparing and cooking dinner with them. Each dish that we made was absolutely delicious. I am salivated right now just thinking about it again. Putu has the best sense of humor. I really loved seeing how her family lives on the farm and all work together to create a heartwarming food experience. I would have never known what it truly feels like to eat in a Balinese home with a Balinese family if it wasn’t for the grace of Putu. She’s the absolute best!! Puta was so amazingly kind and knowledgeable about traditional Balinese food, culture and traditions and for me as a nutritionist it was so much fun to get to know all the local food and cooking techniques. It was also such an honour to see a traditional Balinese home and to be welcomed in such a beautiful and kind way. I would most definitely recommend it to absolutely everyone. Not only did we cook 6 tasty meals, but also learned about the way of living on Bali, starting from how the traditional house looks like, to grinding as a better alternative to a food processor, to farming, religion, culture and many other aspects of everyday’s life. Putu guided us through the whole process and made us feel like good cooks :) She and her family then shared a dinner with us and even gave some local fruits as a gift. Overall, highly recommended!"}], "ambassador" : [{"author_name" : "Wendy", "rating" : 5, "body" : "Putu's home is in a lovely, quiet setting.
