Meet Abhinanda

Originally from Calcutta, Abhinanda now lives in Oshiwara with her husband and son in a contemporary apartment. She studied economics and worked in a bank before deciding to pursue her passion for food, and from there her venture Pepper Corns was born. Abhinanda conducts cooking workshops, hosts birthday parties and TV shows, co-partners food exhibitions and continuously explores other food related events. Her passion for food started at the age of 11 when she made her first apple flan! In her home, all family conversations revolve around food and she enjoys hosting parties for friends and family so that she can help create happy times by cooking for them.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal (1 - 14 guests) Abhinanda warmly welcomes you into her home which reflects the rich art, music, literary and philosophical traditions of Bengali culture. While sipping your welcome drink she will briefly explain the characteristics of Bengali cuisine, famous for its maach (fish) and bhaat (rice) and its blend of sweet and spicy flavors. Your meal will be served in courses, rather than all at once and there is a story, a memory, a history behind every dish. Enjoy a meal that might include dishes such as cholar daal (lentils), prawn mustard malai curry cooked in tender and grated coconut or kosha mangsho (spicy mutton curry) and luchi (deep fried flatbread). Your meal concludes with a dessert such as bhapa doi (steamed yogurt) or rosogollas (balls of fresh cheese soaked in a sweet syrup).

Cooking experience (1 - 14 guests) During your 1.5 hour Mumbai cooking class, learn to cook a Bengali meal from your host Abhinanda. You will learn to make 2-3 dishes such as maach paturi, fish steamed in banana leaves, aloo poshto, potatoes cooked in a lightly spiced poppy seed paste, and luchi, deep fried flatbread. After cooking, share the meal you helped prepare over laughter and conversation with your host. Your meal concludes with a traditional Bengali dessert such as bhapa doi, steamed, sweetened yogurt accented by saffron or cardamom and chai or coffee upon request.

Market visit (1 - 14 guests) Abhinanda warmly welcomes you into her home with a drink. After discussing the menu for the day, drive in her car to the local Andheri neighborhood market. During your market tour, Abhinanda walks you through this lively, open market teeming with produce vendors. She will introduce you to a wide variety of local and seasonal fruits, vegetables and spices and purchase a few ingredients for your meal. After your market tour, you will drive back to Abhinanda's home where you will begin your hands-on cooking class.

Notes: If you choose the alcohol add-on, Abhinanda offers local beer.

GOOD REVIEWS
{ "trip_advisor" : [{"author_name" : "CemanFamily", "rating" : 5, "body" : "Abi was our guide/host. She has an Interesting background- started in banking and, after many years, has switched paths now focusing on her passion for cooking!The market was fascinating. My daughter (11) and myself enjoyed seeing so many different fruits and veggies. We also popped into a local store to see all the different dried lentils and beans they use. Abi had a driver that made it super convenient to get around between market and her home. Once in her home, which was beautiful and a perfect glimpse inside daily living, we cooked a few dishes together. Abi had also prepared food ahead of time so everything ran very smoothly/was well organized. We had a traditional meal and even got to eat it on banana leaf “plate.”I highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in learning about Indian cultural and cuisine."}] }
