Meet Rupa

Rupa is a seasoned home chef, who has been hosting friends, family and strangers (who soon become friends!) for over 2 decades. Her husband was in the shipping line and very often his colleagues came over to taste a home-cooked Indian meal. Rupa wishes to continue this legacy of bringing smiles to people’s faces when they savor delicacies from her home kitchen, made using family recipes. She is known for her exceptional culinary skills and warm hospitality, and in her home you will enjoy a unique dining experience that combines forgotten regional cuisine with the comfort and intimacy of a beautifully designed home.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal (1 - 5 guests) Rupa, her daughter-in-law, Bistriti, and Son, Utsav, live in a beautiful home in Chembur, an upmarket suburb in central Mumbai which is also well connected to North and South Mumbai. Rupa has a mixed background and this colorful heritage has given her access to so many regional cuisines of India, namely Maharashtrian, Goan and Pathare Prabhu. Local ingredients, homemade spices, family recipes and lots of love is Rupa’s secret to creating an unforgettable meal, as she believes that good food is indeed the path to someone’s heart. In her home you can enjoy authentic flavors of niche regional cuisines like Pathare Prabhu, Maharashtrian, CKP (Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu) and Goan. Join the family at their dining table to enjoy a 5-course meal along with interesting insights about the food, history and their origin. A few dishes that you might try are piyush (a refreshing drink made using thickened yogurt and buttermilk) or kokum sharbat (cooling and thirst-quenching drink to beat the heat), suran kaap (yam fry) or mutton keema che muthe (spiced minced mutton) or alu vadi (spiced colocasia or taro root leaves), fish or chicken or mutton or crab gravy, rice or roti and thecha (condiment made with green chillies, peanuts and garlic) or khamang kakdi (cucumber salad). End your authentic Maharashtrian or Pathare Prabhu meal with some dessert such as bhoplyachi kheer (pumpkin pudding) or sago kheer (pudding) and paan (mouth freshener).

Cooking experience (1 - 5 guests) During your Mumbai cooking class with Rupa you will learn to make 2 regional Maharashtrian dishes you will be eating later. In your 1.5 hour hands-on cooking class, learn to make a seasonal vegetable and fish or chicken dish from scratch. These are seasonal, local dishes typical of what the family eats everyday. Rupa is excited to share her culture, culinary traditions, family recipes, tips and tricks and secret spice mixes through this traditional cooking class in Mumbai. After cooking, sit down to share the meal you helped prepare.

Market visit (1 - 5 guests) Meet Rupa at her apartment and together you will drive down to the Chembur fish market for a guided tour. Here you will be introduced to the fresh catch of the day. Rupa will take you to her favorite vendors so that you pick up some fresh ingredients for your cooking class. She will show you the local, seasonal produce that is available and explain how to select the best ones. After shopping at the market, return back to Rupa's home for your cooking and meal experience.

Notes: Rupa can accommodate a vegetarian diet, on request. Please inform in advance if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies. Please note this private Mumbai cooking class with Rupa is very close to NMACC Mumbai, 20 minutes by car/auto.
