Meet Marti

Marti worked as a marketing manager for many years and cooking was a hobby. She learned to cook from her mother and loved cooking and baking for family and friends, and hosting them at home. She always dreamt of having her own studio one day, as cooking gave her so much of joy. Soon her dream became a reality - she quit her job and re-designed her home kitchen into a cooking studio and started to offer culinary experiences. Later she decided to better her skills and enrolled herself in cooking school and became a professional chef. Through her cooking class, Marti’s aim is to share more about Hungarian food, customs, everyday life and the famous Hungarian hospitality. Join Marti on this culinary journey to share stories, recipes, laughter and food like old friends!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal (1 - 9 guests) Marti hosts this experience at her second apartment; she used to live there with her husband before they had their child. Once their son was born, they moved a little further from the city center and converted their downtown apartment into a cooking studio. Her apartment is in a historic building that was built in the 1920s. It is conveniently located in downtown Budapest and is a 12-minute walk from the Hungarian State Opera House. For your meal Marti uses family recipes from her mother and her husband's grandmother's kitchen. She uses fresh, local and homemade ingredients. Join Marti at the dining table to share some traditional Hungarian dishes such as Hungarian goulash or sour cherry soup, chicken paprikash or beef stew, poppy seed bread dumplings or stewed cabbage and gerbeaud (layered cake).

Cooking experience (1 - 9 guests) Join Marti at her cooking studio, a large and well equipped space for a shared, hands-on Budapest cooking class. Marti aims to combine traditional family recipes with new technology. You will learn to cook 3 dishes from scratch (a soup, main course and dessert) during your 2.5-hour hands-on cooking class. Marti's knowledge and passion for cooking is evident in the way she explains how to prepare each dish with step-by-step instructions. After cooking, enjoy a meal with Marti at her dining table.

Market visit (1 - 9 guests) Meet Marti at the market for your gastronomic experience, learning about the history of the place and the local produce, tasting new ingredients, and buying a few ingredients for your cooking class. From Monday to Saturday, Marti will take you to visit Central Market Hall. It is the oldest and largest indoor market in Budapest. You will meet Marti directly at the Central Market Hall and after your market visit, drive 10-minutes to Marti’s home for your cooking class and meal. Please note if you have selected the market tour option, you will cook only one dish in your cooking class (and not 3).

Notes: Unlike most Traveling Spoon experiences, this is a shared, small group class and not a private one. Marti can offer vegetarian dishes on request, please let her know in advance. Please note a welcome drink (palinka - Hungarian fruit brandy), a glass of Hungarian wine, mineral water, homemade soft drinks and coffee is included in the cost of your experience.
