Meet Petra

Petra is originally Togolese and is currently working in the IT sector in Budapest. Her love for food and cooking began early, when she assisted her mother in the kitchen as a child. Petra never stopped cooking ever since, and now she has a special talent when it comes to recreating flavors from her African roots. She loves cooking for friends and family, who often have encouraged her to start her own restaurant. So, she is very excited to share her passion, food and recipes with travelers from around the world. Petra says that even if you wake her up in the middle of the night, she will be happy to cook for you– making her the best roommate and host one could ask for!

An experience with Petra is all about sharing a traditional Togolese meal, learning about the culture, dancing to African music and even getting your hair braided!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal (1 - 6 guests) Petra’s cooking is influenced by her mother and she also loves to experiment in the kitchen, creating her own unique recipes! Togolese cuisine has characteristics of many Western African cuisines, with an additional influence of German and French cuisines. Staple foods include plantain, beans, yam, millet and rice. Togolese cuisine is rich, flavorful and spicy with a variety of sauces, different pâtés and assortment of vegetables. Join Petra at the table to share a few of her favorite dishes from West Africa, such as fufu (mashed cassava) served with light soup or egusi soup (soup chicken with ground melon seeds, also contains meat, fish and vegetables) which is served with eba (cassava flour mixed with hot water and rolled into balls), tchep (meat, rice and vegetables simmered in tomato sauce) and meat/spinach akume (savory porridge made from maize flour) or attieke (cassava semolina) served with fish.

Cooking experience (1 - 6 guests) Petra will teach you to cook two traditional West African dishes in your 1 hour cooking class. This is a hands-on class where you will help Petra to prepare attieke (cassava semolina) served with fish or egusi soup (soup thickened with ground melon seeds, also contains meat, fish and vegetables) which is served with eba and tchep (meat, rice and vegetables simmered in tomato sauce). After your cooking class join Petra to share the dishes you helped prepare.

Notes: If you opt for alcohol at an additional price, please indicate if you would like beer or sake, at the time of booking.
