Meet Maggie

Maggie is part of the Kikuyu community, Kenya’s largest ethnic group who championed the struggle for Kenya’s independence. She is so excited to share with you her Kikuyu roots, traditions and food - that very nutritious. Maggie is a nutritionist and runs her own business. She is very passionate about helping people choose a healthy life and loves learning new things. She joined Traveling Spoon as a host with a desire to share her cooking skills and bring a smile on people's faces, while they try the food she grew up eating.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal (1 - 5 guests) Maggie lives with her husband and son in Kitengela, a suburb of Nairobi. She learned to cook from her mother, who is an amazing cook. Maggie learned all the tips and tricks to cook a traditional Kikuyu meal. Join her on this experience as you discover, learn and have a cultural exchange. A few dishes that you might try at Maggie’s dining table are githeri (maize and beans) or mukimo (mashed green peas) served with chapati and beef stew or gitwero pilau (one pot rice with raw banana, potato and meat) or ugali (Kenyan cornmeal) or tamaki (fish) and mboga (vegetables like cabbage or spinach). End your meal with a hot cup of chai (tea).

Cooking experience (1 - 5 guests) In your 1 hour 30 minute traditional Kenyan cooking class learn to cook a home-cooked kikuyu meal. You will cook a traditional kikuyu meal using my Maggie's family recipes. Learn to make chapati (flatbread) and beef stew with peas from scratch. Maggie will also share useful tips and tricks that she learned from her mother. After cooking, share the meal you helped prepare.

Market visit (1 - 5 guests) Meet Maggie at her home and then walk together to Kitengela market. It is a one stop shop for all your vegetables, fruits, grains and spices. This is a busy, local market and Maggie will guide you through it, so that you can shop for fresh, local, seasonal ingredients for your cooking class. Its a great way to be part of the chaos in the daily lives of locals and get insight into the local produce grown there.

Notes: Maggie can offer a vegetarian meal on request, please let her know if you have any dietary restrictions while booking your Nairobi cooking class online.
